Meet the Mischief Maker: Curious George Coloring Pages

Why Curious George Works So Well as a Coloring Subject

George is one of those rare characters whose whole personality shows in his face. Those wide eyes, the rounded ears, the way his arms are always reaching for something he probably shouldn't touch — there's so much expression packed into a simple silhouette. That makes him genuinely satisfying to color, because the linework does a lot of the storytelling for you.

The original H.A. Rey illustrations leaned into warm, earthy tones: golden yellows, burnt siennas, and soft jungle greens. Staying close to that palette gives finished pages a cozy, storybook feel. But George also works in bright, modern colors if a kid wants to go that route — he's forgiving that way.

What You'll Find in This Collection

The Curious George coloring pages on Worksheetzone cover a solid range of scenes. Some focus on George alone — mid-jump, holding a balloon, or peering into something with that classic tilted-head curiosity. Others include the Man with the Yellow Hat, whose tall silhouette and bright hat make for a fun color contrast against George's warm brown tones.

There are also scene-based pages: George in the city, George in the jungle, George causing some kind of cheerful disaster in a kitchen or a science lab. The difficulty ranges from fairly open, thick-outlined pages suited to younger kids, up to more detailed backgrounds that give older colorists something to actually work with. It's not a one-size situation.

Which Pages Are Best for Younger Kids?

For the 3–6 age range, the solo George portraits with minimal background are the move. Big shapes, clear outlines, nothing fussy. Kids that age tend to fill in areas confidently when the boundaries are obvious, and George's round body shape is exactly that. The city-scene pages are better saved for 7 and up — there's just more going on, and the detail can frustrate a younger child mid-page.

Making the Finished Page Actually Look Good

Colored pencils are the right tool for most of these sheets, especially if you're printing on standard copy paper. Markers bleed through, and watercolors buckle the page unless you're on cardstock. A warm tan like Crayola's "Peach" or Prismacolor's "Goldenrod" gets George's fur color surprisingly close to the original illustrations.

One trick worth knowing: color the yellow hat first and let that anchor your whole palette. Once that bright lemon-yellow is down, everything else — George's brown, the green backgrounds, the red details — naturally balances around it. It sounds small, but it changes how the whole page comes together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these coloring pages suitable for toddlers?

Some are. The simpler George portraits with thick outlines and minimal detail work well for kids ages 3–5. Look for pages where George is centered and the background is either blank or very lightly suggested. Those give little hands enough room to color without getting overwhelmed by small shapes.

What colors do I need to color Curious George accurately?

You really only need a few: a warm medium brown for George, a bright lemon yellow for the Man with the Yellow Hat's hat and jacket, a light tan for skin tones, and a green or two for any nature backgrounds. The original books kept the palette tight and warm, so you don't need a huge set to get a result that looks right.

Can I use these pages in a classroom or library setting?

Yes. Worksheetzone allows one free download per day without any login. After that daily free download, you can log in and download watermarked versions at no cost. For educators or librarians printing in bulk regularly, a Worksheetzone membership removes the watermarks and starts at $0.99 per week — that covers ongoing access without per-page limits.

Did you know Curious George almost never made it to publication?

H.A. Rey and his wife Margret actually fled Paris on homemade bicycles in June 1940 — just hours before the Nazi occupation — carrying the original Curious George manuscript with them. They escaped through Spain and Portugal before eventually reaching New York. The manuscript that would become one of the best-selling children's book series of all time survived that journey rolled up in a bag. The first book was published in 1941, just a year after that escape.
