- Time: 40–50 minutes
What's Inside
Ten tasks in three parts: four multiple-choice items and six written responses, including a quotation rewrite, two full summaries, and a revise-and-justify task. Students read “The Ledger,” a short story, and “Steadying the Ladder,” an essay. A Reader's Goal rule box sets four handout rules. The answer key runs three pages.
Skill Progression
- Guided practice (Part A, 2 tasks): Students use the rule box to spot and explain rule violations in sample entries.
- Supported practice (Part B, 6 tasks): Students select and write qualified claims, supported by paragraph-cited evidence from both texts.
- Independent practice (Part C, 2 tasks): Students revise a flawed summary and justify a cross-text choice.
The sequence follows gradual release: model Part A (I Do), work early Part B items together (We Do), and release Part C (You Do).
Standards Alignment
RL.9-10.2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it is shaped by specific details; provide an objective summary. The standard code can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
How to Use It
Assign it after reading both texts, as guided practice before a theme essay. It also works as a revision workshop after direct instruction on objective summary. While students write, watch whether summaries contain opinion words or uncited quotations. Expect 40–50 minutes.
Who It's For
Grade 9 English I students learning to separate topic from central idea. Support writers with the rule box and paragraph numbers. Pair it with an anchor chart on qualifying words.
RL.9-10.2 asks Grade 9 students to determine a central idea of a text, analyze how it develops, and provide an objective summary. This English I worksheet, Summarizing Theme Objectively, turns that standard into ten tasks built around a short story and a short essay on responsibility and ambition. Students apply four handout rules: state the idea as a full claim, show its development across paragraphs, remove opinion, and cite paragraph numbers for quotations. Fisher & Frey (2014) describe gradual release of responsibility, moving from teacher modeling to guided and independent work, as a reliable structure for building complex skills, and the worksheet follows that sequence from identifying constraints to applying findings to justifying revisions. A three-page answer key supports quick scoring. Teachers can use it for literature circles, theme units, or revision practice on objective summary writing.
