Thanksgiving Grammar Worksheets

Grammar is the branch of language that gives words the ability to alter their shape, their placement within sentences, and their creative combinations with other words. This holds for both verbal and written communication.

Even the most fundamental speech components—the subject noun and verb—seem to be difficult for many children to locate.  It makes sense if their grammatical education in grades 1–8 has been minimal to nonexistent. These Thanksgiving Grammar worksheets are designed as a tool to provide students with opportunities to practice aspects of grammar. Otherwise, to let your kids dive into the holiday atmosphere, try our free Thanksgiving worksheets for other topics right on this website!

Elements of English Grammar

Word Order

English is an analytical language; it employs word order to tell you how distinct words relate to one another. The subject should always appear first in a declarative statement, followed by the verb, objects, and any adverbial phrases (if any).

Punctuation

Punctuation is used in writing English to indicate intonation, pauses, and stressed words. These are some examples of punctuation: dashes, hyphens, brackets, braces, parentheses, apostrophes, ellipses, quote marks, exclamation points, question marks, semicolons, colons, and commas.

Tense And Aspect

Verb tenses provide context for a sentence by indicating whether it refers to the past, present, or future. Similarly, aspect indicates if a statement is about a single instantaneous action, an ongoing or progressive action or state, or a regular or repeating activity.

Determiners

Determiners like "which," "how many," "what," "my," and so forth are necessary to give nouns meaning because they rarely stand alone without previous context. Making sense-filled statements or queries requires the proper use of determiners.

Connectors

As the name implies, connectors "connect" sentences, words, or clauses. Depending on which units they link, they can indicate correlation (either, or, both, and), coordination (but, and, still, nor), or subordination (if, who, that, when, because, although).
